Kris Meeke wins Rally Argentina

Kris Meeke has delighted British rally fans with his breakthrough World Rally Championship victory on Rally Argentina, ahead of Citroen team-mate Mads Ostberg and Elfyn Evans' Ford Fiesta, to become the first British driver to win a round of the WRC in 13 years.

As well as Meekes first WRC win, it was Welshman Evans's first World Rally Championship podium finish, scored after Jari-Matti Latvala's Volkswagen suffered a breakdown on Sunday morning.

Meeke had gone into the Argentina event under some pressure after a poor start to his 2015 campaign. The Dungannon man's early-season form had been hindered by a series of crashes as he finished 10th in Monte Carlo in January, seventh in Sweden and failed to finish in Mexico. Previously, Meeke's best World Rally Championship finishes were four third places last season.

Meeke's win gave Citroen their first World Rally Championship victory since former world champion Sebastien Loeb's win in Argentina two years ago and the Citroen team's one-two also ended a sequence of seven straight wins in the World Rally series for Volkswagen.

Defending world champion Sebastien Ogier, who had won the five previous events, dropped out of contention in Argentina on Friday following a breakdown.

The International Rally Drivers Club extends its congratulations to Kris and Elfyn for flying the union flag for British rallying.
